PHILADELPHIA, PA — A 25-year-old licensed gun carrier was shot in the leg early Sunday, Aug. 16, after his handgun malfunctioned while he tried to defend himself and his cousin during an armed robbery, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

Officers were called to the 4100 block of Germantown Avenue around 2:19 a.m. for a report of a person with a gun, as reported by NBC10 Philadelphia. When they arrived, they found the man with a gunshot wound to his left leg.

According to a preliminary investigation, four unidentified men robbed the man’s cousin of a Rolex watch reportedly valued at $25,000. Then a fifth suspect approached the 25-year-old on a bicycle and pointed a handgun at him, police said.

Police said the man is licensed to carry a gun. He drew his weapon to defend himself and his cousin. The firearm malfunctioned. He was shot.

The suspects fled east on Juniata Street. Officers recovered the man’s gun at the scene.

Police have not said what caused the malfunction, and I am not going to guess. It could have been the gun, the ammunition, the magazine, or the grip under stress. The cause matters less than the reality. Every firearm can fail, and it tends to happen at the worst possible moment.

This is where training and mindset matter more than any piece of gear. Clearing a stoppage has to be automatic, because a man with a gun pointed at you is not going to wait while you figure it out. Run malfunction drills with dummy rounds mixed into your magazines. Shoot your carry gun with the exact ammunition you carry. Keep it clean, keep your magazines in good shape, and replace springs when they need it.

The odds here were already terrible. It was 2 a.m., there were five suspects against two men, and at least one robber was armed and had the drop on him. A carrier in that spot gets one chance to make his draw count. When the gun does not run, everything comes down to what his hands have practiced.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital and placed in stable condition. No arrests have been made, according to police.
