Many of us grew up hanging off of the side of a tree while hunting. It was frigid, anxiety-inducing (swaying in wind gusts), and never stoked the fires of excitement for the pastime of hunting. Now, many of us have grown older, wiser, and desire more creature comforts. There’s no glory in freezing to death while dropping a 10-point buck. A filled hunting tag is a filled tag. So, we have elected to use enclosed box blinds – elevated or on the ground – for a better hunting experience. The only kicker is the cost. The best of both worlds would be escaping Mother Nature at an affordable price. We might have exactly that in a new hunting blind brand: Maverick. So, today we are going to take a look at the Maverick XL-V hunting blind to see if this is a bargain or something that should be tossed in the trash. Let’s dive in!

Installation & Setup – Maverick XL-V Hunting Blind

Setting up the Maverick XL-V hunting blind was a pretty simply process. I would equate it to making coffee. It’s not difficult; just procedural. You need to assemble everything in the correct steps. The same held true with putting together the XL-V hunting blind.

For starters – like assembling Ikea furniture – I always cut open a box and sort its contents. As we outlined above, there is a lot of paneling for the walls and roof along with hardware to connect it all together. My brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and I assembled this in probably 10 to 15 minutes, but I did not obtain any “in process” assembly photos. We were fighting mosquitoes and an extremely muggy Minnesota day. So, we worked as swiftly as possible.

To outline the process, we sorted all of the hardware – the nuts, bolts, and washers – as well as the paneling so we understood everything that we had before us. The panels needed to be “slid into each other” from the top down and then an Extrusion Strip was slid over the top of that to lock everything in place. You would need to repeat this process counter-clockwise for the side panels as well as the roof panels. Connecting panels together and then locking them in with an Extrusion Strip. Some pieces went together more difficultly than others, but with some gentle persuasion from a mallet and my sister-in-law, everything went together swimmingly.

Even the interior and exterior roof cap went together well, but I will note that its mandatory to have 2 people to pull that off. Someone working from the top and the bottom at the same time with the outside person on a small ladder.

The only thing that I additionally provided to the assembly equation was some 2″ Torx deck screws to adhere the base of the hunting blind to the wood platform that my brother-in-law made.

Field Use – Maverick XL-V Hunting Blind

As far as use in the field, there are several comments I can draw from regarding the Maverick XL-V hunting blind. For one, I appreciate how tightly the panels assembled together. This ensures that no rain, snow, or bitter cold wind is going to penetrate the blind and force you to turn in early on a hunt. If you really wanted to ensure the blind was air-tight, it would be pretty easy buy some sealing caulk for cheap from a hardware store and fully weather-proof the inside.

The only “fitment” issue that I noticed is that one of the panels got flexed or bent during transit. Not so much that it was broke by any means, but it made opening and closing one window difficult. That being said, it could still be forcefully closed and opened.

I also appreciated that Maverick put a white film on all of the windows. Then, you don’t unbox your blind for the first time and everything is dirty, and you’re forced to whip out some Windex and a towel at your secret hunting spot. A lot of the photography for this review shows the windows still with the protective white film on them.

Final Thoughts

So, what are my final thoughts on the Maverick XL-V hunting blind?… Overall, for the asking price of $1,499 I believe this hunting blind is a good value. Most enclosed hunting blinds will run you $3,000 to $10,000 nowadays. Those more expensive competitors might be insulated and have upgrades, but the point is that all-too-many companies make the incredibly expensive options and don’t leave many selections that are affordable for hunters. So, I’m grateful to have become acquainted with Maverick and their lightweight and more affordable options.
