AllOutdoor Review – Pecos Paloma + Hyde System – Outdoor Cutting Board

Pecos Outdoors initially made a name for itself by making the ultimate & toughest outdoor table that can hold up to 3,200 lbs and is made completely in the USA. This spring, they released their newest product american-made product, the Pecos Paloma + Hyde System. An outdoor cutting board system made of two components: a magnetic cutting board and EVA pad that mounts to most 45 qt coolers. They can both be used as standalone pieces or together to make your cooler into a workstation. I received a sample this spring and mounted it to a new YETI Tundra 45, and have been testing it since. So let’s see how the outdoor cutting board system is holding up after half a year of use by me and my Florida buddies.

Installation of the Pecos Hyde – Pecos Paloma + Hyde System – Outdoor Cutting Board

There is an installation process that needs to be done first before using the Pecos Paloma + Hyde System. It’s honestly a very easy process to do; it just takes a little bit of time while you wait for the adhesive to cure. Just degrease the top of the cooler. I used a new YETI 45, but most 45 qt coolers should work as long as the lid isn’t dented. Then used the provided Primer 94 stick to prep the cooler lid.

Then it was easy: just peel off the paper from the bottom of the Hyde and attach it to the lid. You need to then let the adhesive and primer cure for at least overnight before using the cooler. That’s why the installation takes some time. Pecos Outdoors also has a QR code with video instructions on installing the Hyde.

Outdoor Kitchen Surface – Pecos Paloma + Hyde System – Outdoor Cutting Board

Having an easy-to-use and clean outdoor kitchen surface is always a big plus for me, with how often I’m doing food prep outdoors. So having my cutting board not rolling around the boat or truck as a stand-alone piece and getting dirty is great. It means one less thing I have to worry about once it’s actually loaded onto the boat with the cooler. Then when I’m prepping food, I can just pop it off the cooler, put it on the boat gunwale, and still have easy access to the cooler without having to move whatever food I’m prepping every time I need something in the cooler. The big rubber feet do a great job of holding it in place so I don’t have to worry about it sliding around on wet surfaces like traditional cutting boards.

Cutting Surface – Pecos Paloma + Hyde System – Outdoor Cutting Board

So the actual Pecos Paloma cutting surface is made from ASA plastic (acrylonitrile styrene acrylate), a pretty tough material that holds up well to impacts and UV resistant. As far as I can tell, it doesn’t cause any excess wear to a knife’s edge and holds up well to impacts, such as my buddy hammering on stubborn oysters. I do need to note that the material does seem to mar up a bit quicker than traditional HDPE (high-density polyethylene) cutting boards. Also, you do need to make sure you don’t cut too close to the aluminum Pecos logo, as the metal can cause excess wear to your knives.

The magnets built into the Pecos Hyde are pretty strong, making sure that the Paloma stays in place. They work as great storage options for just sticking things to the cooler, like terminal tackle while fishing. I used the magnets as a tangle-free method of storing cut-off pompano rigs while I re-rigged rods on the pier. This even worked with sabiki rigs as long as I was careful in the order I attached the hooks. I do want to say, though, while great for storage, you have to be aware of the magnets in the Paloma while using it. They will move your knives if you put them too close.

Cleaning – Pecos Paloma + Hyde System – Outdoor Cutting Board

Cleaning is straightforward for the Paloma; just some dish soap and a scrub sponge is plenty to get everything off the cutting board. You can’t use any harsh alkaline cleaners on it, though. It’s not recommended, and it will damage the aluminum logo. The Hyde has none of these cleaner issues; I often use my bleach-based cooler cleaning spray bottle to clean both it and the cooler after a trip. Though I have found that the Hyde does stain somewhat, with a couple of rust stains from pliers or tools being left on it overnight while on the water.

Final Thoughts – Pecos Paloma + Hyde System – Outdoor Cutting Board

I really do think the Pecos Paloma + Hyde System is a cool addition to have for anyone who is often cleaning game or fish outdoors, or anyone who also cooks outside often. Having a large cutting surface that isn’t the cooler lid is pretty nice, especially when that cutting surface doesn’t move around. The Paloma by itself is a great outdoor cutting board, perfect to place on the tailgate. With its big rubber feet, it’s not going anywhere. I can just detach it from the Hyde and cooler, so I can reach into the cooler without messing up my work surface. Add to that, this is an American-made product with a limited lifetime warranty from Pecos. I would be remiss not to mention a couple of things, though; first off is the weight. The Pecos Paloma weighs 9 pounds, which on an empty Yeti Tundra 45 will flip the cooler over when fully opened. Second is the elephant in the room when it comes to the Pecos Paloma + Hyde System: the price. MSRP is set at $250 for both parts together, or $200 and $100 for each component separately. All my buddies who have used the system have thought it was a very cool and nice system to have, but when they asked how much and learned the price, they all hesitated.

So overall, I think for the right person, this is a great system to have. It functions well and has held up to plenty of abuse from my buddies in Florida. I see myself keeping it in the truck bed this fall for deer and waterfowl, using the magnetic feet to keep it in place while not in use.
