Anschutz Model 1761 Review: Nearly Perfect Plinker
The Anschutz Model 1761 is one of the finest rimfire target rifles available today, and after spending time at the range with it, we can confidently say it earns its reputation as a nearly perfect plinker. German engineering excellence is on full display in every aspect of this rifle, from its match-grade accuracy to its beautifully crafted walnut stock.
Anschutz 1761 Overview
The Model 1761 is an evolution of the venerable Anschutz 54 action, featuring significant improvements including a redesigned bolt lift. The new design replaced the 53-degree bolt lift on the Model 54 with a 60-degree one, moving the three locking lugs to the middle of the bolt rather than the rear. This change brings the advantage of a single-spring striker system with a shorter bolt throw, making operation smoother and faster.
Caliber and Barrel Options
The 1761 is available in .22 LR and .17 HMR configurations. The barrel is crafted from match-grade chrome moly steel with crisp, precise rifling. All barrels are target-crowned and fully free-floated. The barrel profile is notably heavy, contributing to the outstanding accuracy numbers this rifle consistently delivers.
Trigger Performance
One of the standout features of the 1761 is its trigger options. Both single-stage and two-stage configurations are available, each finely adjustable. The two-stage trigger on our test rifle broke at a crisp 8 ounces after the initial take-up - competition-grade performance straight from the box. The safety lever has been improved with a larger surface and smoother operation.
Accuracy Results
At 50 yards from a bench with sandbags, the 1761 delivered exceptional groups:
- RWS Rifle Match (40gr): .285 inches
- RWS R50 (40gr): .240 inches
- S&K Rifle Match: .245 inches
Anschutz's factory testing produced a five-shot aggregate of .326 inches, with the best group measuring .238 inches. This level of accuracy from a production rimfire rifle is truly exceptional.
Stock and Ergonomics
The walnut stock is beautifully proportioned with a well-formed pistol grip that offers comfortable handling. The stock tapers inward over the bottom metal, and checkering on both sides provides a secure grip. Available in classic and thumbhole variants, the stock design complements the rifle's target-oriented purpose.
Who Is the Anschutz 1761 For?
This rifle is ideal for:
- Small game hunting requiring precise shot placement
- Rimfire target shooting and competition
- Serious plinkers who appreciate precision
- Collectors of fine German firearms
The Anschutz 1761 carries a premium price tag that reflects its quality, but for serious rimfire shooters, the accuracy and craftsmanship justify every dollar. It truly earns the title of nearly perfect plinker.
