Berger has added a 6.8 Western load to its Elite Hunter ammunition line, and the Mesa, Arizona maker says it's available now. No pricing or SKU was listed.
A Heavy-for-Caliber .277
The new load pushes a 170-grain Elite Hunter bullet at 2,900 fps. Berger describes it as heavy for the caliber. The projectile carries a hybrid-ogive design and is built with Berger's J4 Hunting Jacket, which Berger says is held to less than .0003-inch total indicated runout (TIR).
The ballistic coefficient is where Berger is leaning hardest. The company lists a 0.339 G7 BC and calls it best-in-class, pairing it with what it describes as an exceptionally consistent BC standard deviation. On terminal performance, Berger says the bullet penetrates approximately 2 to 3 inches before creating a large wound cavity. The company also claims strong downrange energy retention, less wind drift, and effective terminal results out to extended distances.
Winchester and Browning originally built the 6.8 Western around heavy .277-caliber projectiles fed from a short-action rifle, and Berger's entry adds another factory option for shooters already running the cartridge.
