BRN-180 SCNR 10.5” .223 Wylde Upper – $1,199.99
If you want a compact AR upper that doesn’t fight you when you add a suppressor or a folding stock, this is the one worth looking at. The BRN-180 SCNR is Brownells’ latest side-charging, non-reciprocating piston upper—built on the proven AR-180 short-stroke system but with the upgrades shooters actually asked for. Drop it on any mil-spec lower and you get a bufferless package that stays short, runs clean, and handles real-world use without the usual gas and fouling headaches of a standard direct-impingement setup.
Top Features
- Non-reciprocating left-side charging handle that stays stationary during fire and clears optics and your support hand
- 10.5”-tuned 3-position adjustable gas system (Suppressed / Normal / Adverse) optimized for traditional and flow-through suppressors
- Buffer-tube-free short-stroke piston operating system for true folding-stock configurations
- Automatic ejection-port cover plus sealed charging-handle channel that helps keep dirt and debris out of the action
- Upgraded flat-wire guide-rod springs, anti-bounce bolt carrier, full-length steel cam path, and strengthened handguard interface for durability under suppressed use
Why Shooters Love It
The BRN-180 SCNR takes the proven AR-180-style short-stroke piston and adds the modern upgrades shooters have been asking for. The 10.5” .223 Wylde barrel keeps the package short and handy while still offering practical reach out to several hundred yards with the right ammo and optic. Because the recoil system lives entirely in the upper, you can run a folding stock without a buffer tube, and the gas system is specifically tuned so it doesn’t turn into a gas-blowing mess once you add a suppressor. It’s a practical, cleaner-running alternative to a standard direct-impingement upper for anyone who wants compact handling and reliability.
