The final component of Florida’s comprehensive 2026 school safety bill officially went into effect on Thursday, establishing a strict 1,000-foot safety buffer zone surrounding school grounds across the state. Championed by State Representative Michelle Salzman (R – Escambia County), the legislation introduces a new second-degree felony penalty carrying up to 15 years in prison for anyone who discharges a firearm within that perimeter, while codifying explicit protections for lawful self-defense and private property owners.
