BUFORD, GA — A homeowner who was trailed from Atlanta to his Buford apartment complex by four would-be robbers turned one of their own guns on them, killing one man and leaving a second unable to walk, according to the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Gwinnett County police say the shooting happened near 1400 Laurel Crossing Parkway on Sept. 5, 2026. Responding officers found three people shot. One of them, Marvin Wiley, 23, of Atlanta, was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives determined Wiley was one of the armed robbers. The wounded homeowner, identified by police as Ortagus Bennett, was taken to the hospital in stable condition. A Gwinnett County police detective laid out how the robbery unfolded at a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, Oct. 21, as reported by WSB-TV.

Corporal J.K. Bell testified that the group began following the man’s Escalade in a white Kia between 3 and 4 a.m. as he went out to clubs with friends in Atlanta. A screenshot on Wiley’s phone placed the Kia at the man’s last stop that morning. The Kia carried a Texas tag registered to a Ford F-150. It waited as the man parked at the Ellison apartments around 6:40 a.m., Bell said, and three people got out with guns while a camera next door recorded.

What happened next is why this case matters. The robbers came armed. The man they targeted did not stay a victim. Bell testified that the homeowner fought Wiley for the silver revolver Wiley was carrying, took it, and killed him with it. He then shot a second robber across the midsection.

“The second individual who was shot across the midsection was trying to crawl back to the vehicle, the suspect vehicle, but was unable to use his legs,” Bell said.

That second man is E’imod Sanchez Toboris Taylor. Police say the Kia left him at Grady Memorial Hospital. Taylor is charged with felony murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies. A second suspect, Brinson Bernard Crumbley, 23, faces the same charges. Police believe Crumbley drove the getaway Kia. Under Georgia’s felony murder rule, both men are charged in Wiley’s death because he died during the armed robbery they are accused of committing, even though neither of them fired the shot that killed him.

Detectives are still looking for a fourth person. Police say they believe this was an isolated incident with no known threat to the public.

The man who fired has not faced charges. Under questioning from Crumbley’s attorney, Bell agreed that the robbed man fired first and that he is an uncharged convicted felon. A convicted felon is prohibited under federal and Georgia law from possessing a firearm, and that status is a legal problem of its own that is separate from the robbery he fought off. No charging decision has been announced against him for the shooting, and police have attributed the gunfire to his effort to stop four armed robbers who tracked him across two counties to his own front door. Bell testified that a recorded Instagram call two days later appears to capture someone who was present, describing a plan to rob the man of his jewelry that went badly.

The charges against Taylor and Crumbley are allegations. Both are presumed innocent unless convicted.
