DEL RIO, TX — A Del Rio homeowner shot an unknown man inside his house late Saturday night after an unusual noise from his living room woke him up, according to the Del Rio Police Department.

Officers responded at approximately 10:39 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, to the 200 block of Ricks Drive after a report of a residential burglary involving shots fired. When they arrived, they made contact with the homeowner. He told them he had fired his gun after discovering an unknown male inside his residence.

According to the homeowner, he was asleep when the noise came from his living room. He got up to investigate. He encountered a man he did not know inside his home. He fired, striking him.

The man was wounded but fled the residence before officers arrived. Police searched the surrounding area and later located him. Because of the nature of his injuries, he was transported to San Antonio for further medical treatment. Police have not released his name or his condition.

The department’s account is brief, but the core facts are not complicated. The man was a stranger, and he was inside someone else’s home late at night. Police are handling it as a residential burglary, and they refer to him as the suspect.

More from USA Carry:

Getting up to check a noise in your own house is one of the most common things a homeowner does, and it is one of the hardest situations to handle well. You are coming out of sleep, you do not know what is waiting for you, and you have no idea how many people are inside. When the layout allows it, holding a position you can defend and calling 911 keeps the encounter on your terms instead of the intruder’s. That is not always possible, and the mindset has to be settled before the noise ever comes, not while you are standing in a dark hallway trying to figure it out.

The Criminal Investigations Division is still investigating. Police say criminal charges against the suspect are pending. He has not been named or charged, and any charges filed will be allegations, not convictions. The department has not announced any charging decision regarding the homeowner.
