FLORENCE, SC — An alleged active shooter who overturned his vehicle in a ditch, kept firing his weapon, and ignored orders to surrender was shot by Florence County deputies Sunday and has since died, according to Sheriff TJ Joye.
Deputies were called to W. Lucas Street for a report of an active shooter, the sheriff’s office said, as reported by WBTW News13.
By the time deputies got there, the man’s vehicle was overturned in a ditch. He allegedly kept firing anyway. Deputies told him to surrender. He ignored them, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies shot him.
EMS took him to the hospital. On Monday, Joye announced that the man had died.
His name and age have not been released. The sheriff’s office has not said what he was firing at or whether anyone else was hurt.

For anyone who carries, this is how an active-shooter call looks from the other side of the windshield. Deputies arriving on a call like this are looking for a person with a gun, and they do not know who you are. If you are armed nearby and not facing an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm, the mindset is cover, distance, a holstered firearm, and a 911 call that describes you clearly to the people who are coming.
Joye has asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the state’s criminal investigative agency, to investigate the shooting. No findings from that investigation have been released.
