DECATUR, GA — A DeKalb County apartment resident shot a 48-year-old man who forced his way inside armed with a knife on the night of Sept. 30, and police say the resident is not facing charges.

Officers were called to the 1300 block of Friendly Heights Boulevard in unincorporated Decatur around 11:20 p.m., as reported by Atlanta News First. They found a man with a gunshot wound. He was identified as Ennis Vantrell, and he was taken to the hospital, where he is expected to survive.

Police believe Vantrell forced his way into an apartment. He was reportedly armed with a knife. The resident fired. Vantrell went down with a gunshot wound.

Everything about this one comes down to distance, and the resident had none. A knife is a contact weapon, and a man who has already come through your door at 11:20 at night has closed the gap before you have finished processing what is happening. There is no safe room, no window to retreat through, and no time to go looking for a firearm stored somewhere else. The gun either is within reach when the door gives way, or it is not. That is the mindset piece. The fight picks the time and place, and it picked an apartment on a Wednesday night.

Police have not said what happened in the seconds between the door and the shot, and they have not identified the resident.
