LIBERTY COUNTY, GA — A 19-year-old woman walking home before dawn Sunday was shot in the arm after three men she had ignored opened fire on her, and her father came out of the house shooting back, according to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the 100 block of West Pine Street just before 5 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, as reported by WTOC. The sheriff’s office said the woman was walking home when three men began verbally harassing her. She ignored them. Multiple rounds were then fired in her direction. One struck her in the arm.

That is the entire threat picture. Three men answered a woman’s silence with gunfire on a residential block in the dark. At that point, nobody on that street was safe, and the person they were shooting at was already bleeding.

Her father heard the commotion. He came outside with a firearm. He fired at the men. They left the scene.

The woman was taken to the hospital and treated for her injury. Deputies said it is unknown whether any of the three men were hit. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, according to WSAV News 3, which described the harassment as catcalling.

No charging decision involving the father has been announced, and the sheriff’s office has not publicly characterized his actions beyond describing the sequence. What deputies describe is a father responding to active gunfire aimed at his daughter. Men who have just put rounds into a 19-year-old for not talking to them are an imminent threat to her and to anyone else who steps outside.

More from USA Carry:

There is a mindset lesson here that cuts in two directions. The father did what most of us hope we would do: he recognized gunfire for what it was, armed himself, and moved toward the danger because his daughter was in it. He did not wait inside for deputies while three men kept shooting at her. The second direction is harder. He fired toward a group of men on a dark street in a neighborhood before 5 a.m., and nobody can say yet whether his rounds hit anyone or where they ended up. Every round that leaves your muzzle is yours, including the ones that miss. I am not second-guessing a man who ran outside to his wounded daughter. I am pointing out that the hardest part of a fight like this is identifying your target and what is behind it when you are scared, it is dark, and you have seconds. That skill is built in training, not in the moment.

His daughter is alive. The three men who shot her are still out there.
