BOWMAN, GA — A property owner shot a man he found inside his vacant house on Bowers Street after the suspect tried to assault him and a fight broke out, according to Elbert County deputies.

Deputies responded to the house on Monday, September 21, on a report of shots fired, as reported by WSPA. Following an investigation, deputies said the owner encountered a male suspect inside the residence. The suspect reportedly attempted to assault the owner. A fight followed. Shots were fired. The intruder was hit and ran from the scene.

He did not get far. Deputies located him a short time later, and he was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He is listed in stable condition and is in the custody of the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office.

What deputies describe is a fight at contact distance, not a standoff across a room. The suspect came at the owner first, and the two were already fighting before any shot was fired. At that range there is no time to size up the other man, no way to know if he is armed, and no guarantee of coming out on top with your hands. The owner was in it whether he wanted to be or not, and the gun is what ended it.

More from USA Carry:

If you own a vacant property, walk in with the mindset that someone could already be inside. The owner in this case was in a fight before he had a chance to think about it, and the only reason it ended with him walking away is that he had a way to end it.

Neither man has been publicly identified. No charges have been publicly announced against either man, and the incident remains under investigation.
