Here is everything you need to know.

Glock Gen 6 Release Date and Models

Glock officially announced the Gen 6 on December 6, 2025, with the official launch on January 20, 2026 at SHOT Show in Las Vegas. The Gen 6 lineup initially includes four models, all chambered in 9mm Luger:

- Glock G17 Gen 6 (full-size, 17+1 capacity)

- Glock G19 Gen 6 (compact, 15+1 capacity)

- Glock G45 Gen 6 (compact crossover frame)

- Glock G49 Gen 6 (slim-frame compact)

All Gen 6 models are priced in line with the previous Gen 5 models. Each pistol comes with 2 magazines, a magazine speed loader, cleaning kit, user manual, carry case, backstrap set (2mm and 4mm), and three optic adapter plates.

Key New Features of the Glock Gen 6

The Gen 6 represents a major step forward from the Gen 5 platform. Here are the headline improvements:

1. Factory Optic-Ready Slide (Gen 6 ORS): All Gen 6 models come optic-ready as standard — not a special MOS variant. Three adapter plates are included to mount virtually any major pistol red dot sight directly to the slide without aftermarket plates.

2. Flat-Faced Trigger: The Gen 6 introduces a flat-faced trigger design with reduced take-up and over-travel, improved trigger safety blade, and slightly wider trigger face for better pressure distribution. The Safe Action System is maintained.

3. RTF6 Grip Texture: The new RTF6 (Rough Texture Frame) grip texture covers more surface area, including the extended thumb rest, for better grip in all conditions. Two textures are combined for performance and comfort.

4. Ergonomic Frame Improvements: A palm swell, extended thumb rest, enlarged beavertail, and aggressively undercut trigger guard all work together to provide a higher, more secure grip and more natural point of aim.

5. Enhanced Slide Serrations: Angled, deeper slide serrations at both front and rear provide more tactile engagement for slide manipulations.

6. Improved Ambidextrous Controls: Better bilateral slide stop levers and a truly reversible magazine release for left-handed users.

7. New Barrel Design: Updated barrel geometry and chamfering. Note that Gen 6 barrels are not backwards compatible with earlier generations due to design changes.

8. Single Captive Recoil Spring: The Gen 6 returns to a single captive recoil spring assembly (similar to Gen 1-3), simplifying maintenance.

Glock Gen 6 vs Gen 5: What Changed

Upgraders from Gen 5 to Gen 6 will notice several meaningful differences:

- Optics ready standard: Gen 5 required the separate MOS variant for optic-ready slides. Gen 6 includes the optic system on every model.

- Flat-faced trigger: Gen 5 used the traditional curved trigger face. Gen 6 adopts the now-popular flat-faced design.

- Grip texture: Gen 6 adds RTF6 texture across more areas, including the thumb rest. Gen 5 had less extensive texture coverage.

- Recoil spring: Gen 6 reverts to a single captive spring assembly vs Gen 5's dual captive recoil spring.

- Barrel compatibility: Gen 6 barrels are not interchangeable with Gen 5 due to different geometry.

- Included accessories: Gen 6 comes with three optic adapter plates included in the box. Gen 5 MOS models came with adapter plates separately.

Gen 5 accessories like holsters and magazines will generally be compatible, but verify fitment with your specific holster manufacturer for optic-bearing configurations.
