A homeowner in Darien, Connecticut, fired his gun at multiple masked suspects during an attempted home invasion early Thursday morning after discovering at least one of the intruders was armed, according to police. The confrontation occurred while the homeowner’s family, including young children, was inside the residence.

The attempted home invasion occurred around 6 a.m. on March 5 on Five Mile River Road in the coastal town of Darien.

Police say the homeowner confronted three masked suspects who had approached the residence and attempted to gain entry while the family was still inside the home. According to investigators, a member of the household spotted the suspects on the property and immediately called 911.

Authorities say the suspects appeared to know where a hidden spare key was located outside the residence and used it in an attempt to gain access to the house. As the suspects tried to enter, the homeowner reportedly observed that at least one of the individuals was armed with a handgun, significantly escalating the danger for the family inside.

Faced with what police described as a potential armed home invasion, the homeowner fired his firearm at the suspects. The gunfire caused the suspects to immediately flee the scene, and no members of the household were injured.

Suspect Later Appears at Hospital With Gunshot Wound

Later that morning, investigators learned that a juvenile male arrived at Bridgeport Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound.

Authorities believe the individual may be one of the suspects involved in the attempted home invasion. The juvenile underwent surgery and was reported to be in stable condition.

Police have not yet announced formal charges in connection with the incident as the investigation remains ongoing.

Stolen Vehicle Linked to Suspects

Investigators also determined that the suspects had been traveling in a vehicle stolen earlier from a residence in Fairfield, a neighboring Connecticut community. The stolen vehicle was later recovered by law enforcement and is being processed as evidence.

Police say they are continuing to investigate the incident and are working with neighboring departments as they attempt to identify the remaining suspects.

Armed Citizens and Home Defense

While the legal outcome of the investigation remains to be seen, the incident highlights a reality many American gun owners understand well: violent home invasions often unfold quickly and without warning.

In this case, the homeowner was confronted with multiple masked suspects attempting to enter the residence while his family was inside, and at least one suspect was reportedly armed.

Faced with that threat, the homeowner responded with force, an action that appears to have stopped the attempted invasion and caused the suspects to retreat.

As police continue their investigation, the case serves as another example of how armed citizens sometimes become the first and only line of defense when criminals attempt to force their way into occupied homes.

Authorities have not released the name of the homeowner.
