Leupold RX-5000 Adds Hornady 4DOF and Precision Cut Archery
Firmware updates that actually add capability instead of just patching bugs are rare enough to be worth reporting. Leupold is pushing two ballistic solvers to the RX-5000 handheld rangefinder, and both are free downloads through the Leupold Control App over Bluetooth. New and existing units both get them.

The bigger news for rifle shooters is Hornady’s 4DOF calculator. The RX-5000 is the first handheld rangefinder to run it. Where most ballistic solvers work off a ballistic coefficient, 4DOF uses Doppler-measured drag data paired with the physical model of the specific bullet you’re shooting. That combination gives you drop and wind drift numbers that hold up better at distance than a BC-based solution.

- Max Range: 5,000 yards reflective, 3,100 yards on trees, 2,000 yards on deer
- Rifle Modes: TRIG, CDS, and Hornady 4DOF
- Archery: Precision Cut Archery with arrow weight, velocity, peep height, and environmentals
- Display: Red OLED, three selectable reticles (Duplex, Plus Point, Duplex with Plus Point)
- Accuracy: +/- 1/2 yard to 125 yards
- Housing: Magnesium chassis with rubber armor, waterproof
- Power: CR123 battery, 4,000+ actuations
- Weight: 9.7 ounces, 4.4 inches long
- MSRP: $699.99 (software update is free)
Bowhunters get Precision Cut Archery, which builds a solution from your arrow weight, arrow velocity, peep height, and current atmospherics. The point is matching your sight tape rather than fighting it. Eric Overstreet, Technology Product Line Manager at Leupold, said PCA reduces re-zero requirements when archery camp moves to a different elevation, and returns ranges corrected to your tape regardless of where you are.

CDS remains the default rifle mode with 25 selectable ballistic groups, so nobody’s forced into 4DOF if they’ve already got a profile that works. Leupold picked both solvers for the BX-6 Range HD earlier this year, and this update brings the same software down to the handheld.
Everything still runs through the Control App, which also handles GPS pinning to onX Hunt, HuntStand, DeerCast, Google Maps, Apple Maps, and ATAK.

Does adding 4DOF push the RX-5000 onto your list, or are you already sorted on ballistic solvers? Let us know. We always appreciate the feedback.
