Leupold VX-Freedom Straight-Wall Ships With Three Calibrated Dials

By Sam.S •

Straight-wall cartridge hunting has grown fast, mostly because states that used to restrict deer hunters to slugs opened the door to .350 Legend and its relatives. The optics side has been slower to catch up. Leupold’s newest scope is built specifically for those rifles.

VX-Freedom Straight-Wall

The VX-Freedom Straight-Wall ships with three pre-calibrated elevation dials, one each for .350 Legend, .400 Legend, and .450 Bushmaster. The .350 Legend dial comes installed. The other two are in the box and swap out with an Allen wrench, which means one scope covers whichever straight-wall rifle you end up carrying.

Vici Peters, Gold Ring Product Line Manager at Leupold, framed the problem straight. Longer legal shots mean compensating for drop, and straight-wall cartridges drop hard. Her pitch is choosing your cartridge, zeroing the rifle, installing the matching dial, and then working the range, dial, shoot sequence.

Dialing beats holdover for this class of cartridge. A .450 Bushmaster loses altitude in a hurry past 150 yards, and a BDC reticle asks you to guess which hash mark applies while a deer walks. Turning a turret to a known number and holding dead on removes that step.

The optical package is standard VX-Freedom, built on Leupold’s Advanced Optical System with the light transmission and glare control that line has run for years. It’s a lightweight scope, which fits since most straight-wall rifles are carried through timber rather than set up on a bench.

We’re seeing more straight-wall rifles hit shelves every season now that Winchester has both .350 and .400 Legend in the field alongside .450 Bushmaster. Pre-calibrated dials for all three at $399.99 makes sense for anyone who owns more than one of them.
