KERRVILLE, TX — A 47-year-old Kerrville man shot another man who showed up at his door Thursday morning over an alleged debt and pulled a knife on him, according to the Kerrville Police Department. The 39-year-old was shot multiple times and remained in critical condition after surgery.

Officers were sent to a report of a shooting at a residence in the 100 block of West McFarland Drive at about 8:03 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026, as reported by News 4 San Antonio. They found a 39-year-old Kerrville man in front of the house with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers started first aid. He was taken by ambulance to Peterson Regional Medical Center, then flown to a San Antonio trauma center. He underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition. Police released no further update on him.

Investigators say the 39-year-old went to the house to confront the man who lives there about an alleged debt. The resident, 47, met him at the door. Police say the 39-year-old brandished a knife during the confrontation. The resident shot him.

A knife at a doorway is a contact-distance weapon. There is no space to back up, no time to talk it down, and the man holding it is already close enough to use it. The resident did not go looking for this fight. It came to his threshold, and he answered it where he stood.

The resident is cooperating and has already been interviewed by detectives, police say. Based on preliminary information, detectives believe he acted in self-defense. That is the department’s characterization, not a ruling. The case goes to the 216th District Attorney’s Office for review once the investigation is finished, and the district attorney makes the final call. No charges have been announced against either man, and the investigation is ongoing.

More from USA Carry:

The resident’s cooperation matters here. Sitting for an interview and giving detectives a clear account early is what lets them reach a preliminary self-defense finding this quickly instead of leaving the question open for weeks.

Neither man has been publicly identified. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Darin Trahan at 830-258-1311.
