SHREVEPORT, LA — A man who was punched in the face inside a Shreveport business fired a handgun and struck his attacker in the hand, and the suspect now faces a battery charge, according to Shreveport police.

Police identified the suspect as Michael Durham, 42, as reported by KTBS. Officers were called to Whaley Food Service on Freestate Boulevard around 5 p.m. after a report of a shooting.

A witness told investigators Durham entered the business and punched another man in the face. The witness then heard two gunshots. Durham ran from the building.

Investigators said the man who was punched fired a handgun during the confrontation, striking Durham in the hand. Durham was treated at Ochsner LSU Health for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The other man was taken to Willis-Knighton North with minor head injuries.

According to police, the witness also said Durham had previously threatened to harm the man because he believed the man was having an affair with his wife.

The witness described the punch and then the gunshots, but nothing released so far fills in what happened between them. That stretch is where a case like this gets decided. Deadly force is justified only against an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm. Whether the attack kept coming, how badly the man was hurt in those seconds, and what he knew about Durham’s earlier threat all bear on that question.

More from USA Carry:

That earlier threat is the part I would not ignore if I were in this man’s shoes. When someone tells you he intends to hurt you, treat it as real. Report it, and think through where he could find you, including the places you spend every weekday.

Durham was arrested on a charge of second-degree battery. The charge is an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless convicted. The man who fired has not been publicly identified. Police have not said whether he will face charges, and that call ultimately belongs to prosecutors.
