COCKEYSVILLE, MD — Baltimore County Police detectives are investigating a Halloween night shooting after a Cockeysville homeowner fired on three masked men who approached him in his driveway, killing one of them.
It happened around 10:40 p.m. Saturday in the 10000 block of Greenside Drive. The homeowner told police three men wearing Halloween masks walked up on him in his driveway, armed, and threatened him, as reported by CBS Baltimore (WJZ).
He pulled his own gun. He fired at the men. Then he called 911.
Officers searching the area found one of the men dead a short distance away. Police identified him as Amon Walker, 20. The other two men, both adults, were located after they went to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. Police said they also recovered a loaded handgun believed to have belonged to one of the men.
“There was a car that went by fast, and we were inside watching TV, and we heard popping sounds, and it was very, very scary,” a neighbor told the station. Neighbors said the shooting came after most families on the street had already wrapped up their Halloween celebrations.
Three against one, late at night, on his own property. The homeowner had his gun on him when the men came up the driveway, not in a drawer somewhere inside the house. In an encounter that close and that fast, there is no time to go get it.
Driveways are part of the mindset conversation I keep coming back to. Home is where most people let their guard down, and the stretch between the street and the front door is where that happens first. Paying attention there costs nothing.
