NASHVILLE, TN — A 39-year-old security guard shot a man outside Nashville’s Greyhound bus station Sunday morning. Police say the man threw hot coffee in the guard’s face, knocked him to the ground, and struck him in the head with a magazine that had fallen from the guard’s vest.

Metro Nashville police identified the guard as Douglas West and the man as 22-year-old Jacory McIntosh, as reported by FOX 17 News and WSMV 4. According to police, West had asked McIntosh to leave the station off Rep. John Lewis Way South about an hour before the shooting.

Detectives say surveillance video shows what happened next. McIntosh came back. He threw a cup of hot coffee in West’s face. He charged at him multiple times and punched him.

Then McIntosh knocked West to the ground. A firearm magazine had fallen from West’s vest, and police say McIntosh used it to strike him in the head again and again. He also threatened to kill West, according to police.

A bystander, John Hoan, recorded part of the fight on his phone. The video shows two security guards struggling with a man in a white shirt.

“It was shocking. It was disturbing,” Hoan said. “I saw the one security officer on the ground by the car getting punched on by the dude.”

The fight moved around a car, with a second security guard now involved. McIntosh broke away. West fired three shots.

McIntosh was hit in the hip and leg. Hoan said two people from the bus station ran outside to call 911 and apply a tourniquet. Police said McIntosh is recovering at a hospital. West suffered burns and bruising to his face.

West was armed through the whole fight, and the man on top of him was hitting him with a piece of West’s own gear.

In video aired by WSMV 4, West draws his gun and fires twice while McIntosh is out of frame. Police say surveillance footage shows McIntosh making a slight movement toward West just before he fired. The video then shows West following McIntosh around a white car and firing once more. The coffee, the repeated head strikes, and the threat to kill all came before those shots.

Police said McIntosh is expected to be arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault once he is discharged from the hospital. No charge has been filed yet, and any charge is an allegation until proven in court. Metro police say West will not be charged, according to WSMV 4.
