POTD: Ballester-Molina – Argentina’s Colt Copy for WWII
Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have an Argentine Hafdasa Ballester-Molina semi-automatic pistol manufactured 1938-1953. This is Argentina’s licensed copy of the Colt 1911 design chambered in .45 ACP (marked as 11.25mm).
Hafdasa (Hispano-Argentina Fábrica de Automóviles S.A.) produced the Ballester-Molina as Argentina’s standard military sidearm. The design closely follows Browning’s 1911 but with differences – the trigger mechanism and mainspring housing differ from Colt’s implementation, and parts aren’t interchangeable despite visual similarity.
During WWII, Britain purchased approximately 10,000 Ballester-Molinas through Lend-Lease when 1911 production couldn’t meet demand. These saw service with British and Commonwealth forces, particularly in the Pacific theater. The pistols proved reliable and adequate, though British armorer support for the slightly different mechanism was challenging. After WWII, surplus Ballester-Molinas flooded the U.S. market as inexpensive shooters. Many were refinished, modified, or used hard, making original-condition examples uncommon. The import mark on this receiver confirms post-manufacture importation to the United States.
The included Colt hard case is not original to this Argentine pistol but provides period-appropriate storage. Argentina continued Ballester-Molina production until 1953, long after WWII ended, supplying military and police forces. Ballester-Molinas represent practical firearms manufacturing – taking a proven design and producing it domestically rather than importing expensive foreign pistols. The quality was adequate for military service, if not quite matching Colt standards.
