Everyone recognizes GSG 9. Fewer people have heard of the BFE+, the specialized unit that exists precisely to fill the gap between Germany's standard federal riot police and its famous counterterrorism unit. Officers don't arrive at the BFE+ directly. They first serve in a standard evidence-gathering and arrest unit, and only after proving themselves physically and personally qualified do they earn the additional certification needed to advance.
That path runs through roughly three months of intensive training at Germany's Centralized BFE+ Training Facility, covering marksmanship, tactics, and emergency medicine under realistic, high-pressure scenarios, with teamwork and mental resilience weighted just as heavily as shooting skill.
The unit's standard loadout includes the Heckler & Koch G36 rifle and MP5 submachine gun, looking so clean and unmarked in official photos that they could pass for fresh off a display rack rather than issued gear - and that includes the uniforms as well.
The training facility has been preparing officers for this role for a decade now. Today's TFB Photo of the Day looks at the unit most people have never heard of. Beware of the men in gray!
