POTD: Dreyse Needle Fire Sequential Pair – Bridge to Centerfire

By Sam.S

Welcome to today’s Photo of the DayHere we have a sequential pair of engraved Dreyse needle fire self-cocking revolvers, serials 11054 and 11055, manufactured 1864-1872. The Dreyse needle fire system ranks among the first practical cartridge-based small arms, bridging paper percussion cartridges and fully contained centerfire cartridges.

Johann Nicolaus von Dreyse developed the needle fire system where a long firing pin pierces the paper cartridge to strike a primer at the bullet base. This allowed faster loading than percussion caps while maintaining reliability. The system first appeared in the Dreyse “needle gun” rifle adopted by Prussia in 1841.

Both revolvers are identically marked and decorated. The topstrap reads “F.v. DREYSE A SOMMERDA” with “Cal: 0,30″ 3 Cent 3K. Pulv.” on the right side. Fine scroll engraving covers the frame sides, breech, and triggerguard. The octagon section of the frame housing the firing mechanism is embellished with silver wire geometric patterns.

The 8mm chambering provided adequate power for a pocket revolver. Fixed sights and checkered pistol grip with lanyard ring are standard features. The sequential serial numbers suggest these were manufactured consecutively, possibly as a cased pair originally.

The needle fire system’s main disadvantage was gas leakage around the firing pin channel, which fouled mechanisms quickly. By the 1870s, metallic cartridges with self-contained primers proved superior. Dreyse needle fire weapons became obsolete rapidly, but their historical importance as transitional technology remains significant. The custom hardwood case with leather covering and brass reinforcement houses both revolvers in red velvet lining.
