POTD: DWM 1900 American Eagle Luger with Ideal Holster

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have the first Luger sold to Americans, wearing an accessory that solved a problem Luger had not solved yet. This is a DWM Model 1900 American Eagle in 7.65mm Luger with an Ideal combination shoulder stock holster.

The Model 1900 is the earliest commercial Luger, and it is a different animal from the gun most people picture. Thin fast taper barrel, flat top breechblock, dished toggles with a lock built in, and a grip safety in the backstrap that later models dropped. Straw and niter blue on the small parts. The American Eagle on the chamber marks it for the US market, and the timing was good, since the Army bought a thousand Model 1900s in 1901 to run through trials.

The Ideal is the part that makes this one worth a second look. If you wanted a shoulder stock on a Luger in 1900 there was nothing on the pistol to attach it to. The machined lug on the back of the frame came later. The Ideal got around it by replacing the grips with metal framed panels that carry the attachment point themselves, so a telescoping arm and a leather bodied holster clip onto the grip frame with no cutting or drilling.

Bolt it on and you have a carbine of sorts. Pull it off and you have a stock pistol again. Nobody had to butcher anything, which is why one turns up on a gun this early.
