The Brigade Speciale Beveiligingsopdrachten emerged from necessity. In 1975, with Europe rattled by the Munich massacre and rising terrorism, Major General E.N. Spronk of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee identified an operational gap: the specialized counter-terrorist units on the books were too blunt an instrument for the majority of high-risk situations requiring expert intervention.

The Marechaussee needed something in between, a dedicated unit capable of rapid response across counter-terrorism, VIP protection, organized crime operations, and covert surveillance. The BSB was established with German expertise, trained initially by GSG 9 operatives, and achieved operational status in 1976.

Nearly five decades later, the unit's training pipeline remains one of Europe's most selective. Candidates begin with a psychiatric evaluation, then face a grueling three-day assessment where current operators evaluate their fit within the team. Those who advance enter 25 weeks of formal training in everything from close protection and arrest tactics to observation work and precision marksmanship. The result is a polyvalent operator capable of functioning across urban, jungle, maritime, and arid environments.

Modern threats have only intensified demands on the brigade. As recent commentary from BSB leadership acknowledges, the security landscape has grown demonstrably less forgiving, with adversaries leveraging technological advancements. The unit operates continuously, 24/7, across protection details for government and diplomatic figures in high-risk zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan, armed observation operations, and high-impact arrests.

Their operational toolkit normally spans around Glock pistols, HK416 assault rifles, HK MP5 submachine guns, FN P90 compact rifles, and armored G-Class vehicles. Specialized K9 teams round out the capability set.
