Ok, this is big and thoughtful. This TFB Photo of the Day pairs an 1870 canvas with its modern answer. Alphonse de Neuville's "Les Dernières Cartouches" captured French marine and artillery troops making their final stand inside the Bourgerie inn during the Battle of Bazeilles, fought August 31 and September 1, 1870, as far larger Bavarian forces closed in. Outnumbered and running low on ammunition, the soldiers held the position until the cartridges ran out. More than a century later, the French Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment restaged the same composition, swapping period rifles for modern carbines and turning a rubble-strewn room into a near shot-for-shot recreation, right down to the wounded man propped against the wall.

Apparently, some paintings never really left the battlefield. It's the kind of continuity that would make any historical reenactment society jealous, minus the actual siege. This isn't a staged photo for its own sake; it's a unit tracing its lineage back to the room where it started. Imagine the work and thought that went into recreating this photoshoot.
