POTD: The SWD M11/Nine – The Everyman’s Machine Gun, in a Briefcase

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a true piece of Cold War Americana, packaged for a spy movie. This is an SWD M11/Nine, a 9mm submachine gun, and it comes tucked into a working “briefcase gun” rig.

The lineage runs back to Gordon Ingram and the famous MAC-10 of the early 1970s: small, cheap, dead simple, built on the idea that fewer parts means fewer things to break. After the original Military Armament Corporation folded, the design passed through a few hands until Wayne Daniel’s SWD picked it up under the Cobray name. In 1983 he stretched the little .380 M11 receiver to handle 9mm and mass-produced it right up to the 1986 registration cutoff. Because so many were made before that deadline, the M11/Nine became the cheapest way into legally owning a transferable machine gun. It earns its “bullet hose” nickname honestly, running well past a thousand rounds a minute.

The briefcase is the fun part. The gun and its silencer mount inside, fired through a port hidden behind a business-card holder, worked by a lever through the bottom of the case. Close it up and it’s just a man with a briefcase. That kind of covert kit fit the world these guns came from, back when MAC’s co-founder ran a counter-terror school and the whole scene lived in the pages of Soldier of Fortune.
