If the Vikings had access to AR-15s, things might have gone a little differently. Judging by these images from Viking Brutality 2026, they would also have needed a good pair of running shoes. Among the competitors at this year's event was a Viking-inspired shooter carrying an axe in one hand and an AR-15 in the other. Somewhere between a historical reenactment, a modern shooting match, and a fever dream after watching too much Vikings, this look managed to steal the show.

The competitor took home the cosplay win, which seems entirely appropriate. When your competition includes people carrying modern firearms, showing up looking ready to raid a medieval monastery is certainly one way to stand out. Especially in a country (Sweden) where you’re normally not even allowed to wear a knife.

Viking Brutality is a two-gun-style shooting competition that combines marksmanship with physical challenges across multiple stages. Competitors have to do more than look the part, but a little theatrical flair never hurts.

The images are a reminder that practical shooting doesn't always have to be all plate carriers, camouflage, and serious faces. Sometimes, apparently, all you need is an axe, an AR-15, and the confidence to look like you just sailed in from the ninth century.

Today's Photo of the Day, where the line between Norse raider and modern rifle competitor gets wonderfully blurry.

Would you run an AR-15 and an axe at a shooting match, or is that a little too much Viking for one day? What historical warrior would you choose for a shooting competition cosplay?
