POTD: Wise Lite Arms AJM 53 – A Copy of a Copy

By Sam.S •

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a copy of a copy. This is a Wise Lite Arms AJM 53, a semi-auto belt-fed rifle made in Boyd, Texas, and its family tree runs straight back to the MG 42.

Quick lineage lesson. The Germans fielded the MG 42 in World War II, a recoil operated, roller locked gun designed around Werner Gruner’s work that ran somewhere near 1,200 rounds a minute. After the war Yugoslavia built its own version, the M53, built on German tooling left over from the war and kept in 8mm Mauser. The Yugoslavs slowed it to roughly 950 rounds per minute and left off the mount for the anti-aircraft sight. The M53 stuck around in Yugoslav hands until 1999, and a good number were exported to places like Iraq.

Wise Lite took that M53 pattern and made something a civilian could buy. The AJM 53 runs semi-auto only, firing with the bolt closed. That’s a big change from the open bolt, full auto original. It’s built from a mix of surplus parts and new manufacture, and the trigger housing takes standard AR-15 style fire control groups. I personally think that’s a smart call, since you aren’t hunting down unobtainium fire control parts when something wears out.

Obviously you won’t get the famous buzzsaw sound out of it. You still get to feed belts, set it up on a tripod and run an MG 42 family gun at the range, which is about as close as most of us will ever get.

Most of our POTDs utilize images from our friends at Rock Island Auction Company, the premier firearms auction in the United States. Take some time to browse their current auctions – who knows, maybe you’ll find a piece of history to take home!
