PROOF Research Launches PXT Rifling Tech & 2 FDX Rifle Platforms

By Sam.S

PROOF Research is announcing something that does not come along often in barrel technology: a fundamental redesign of how a bullet engages rifling. The new PROOF Exponential Twist system, or PXT, is a progressive twist rifling profile that replaces the conventional constant-twist approach that has defined rifle barrels for generations. The results coming out of testing are significant enough that they built two new FDX rifle platforms around it.

To understand why PXT matters, you need to understand what happens in a conventional barrel. When a bullet leaves the case and engages traditional constant-twist rifling, it contacts the lands at roughly a 6-degree angle and is forced to full rotational speed within the first quarter inch of travel. That abrupt engagement creates a pressure spike, puts significant stress on the projectile, and concentrates barrel wear in the first two inches of the bore. Those first two inches are where most barrel erosion occurs, and that erosion is what eventually kills accuracy.

PXT addresses this by starting at a very slow twist rate, often in the range of 1:250 to 1:500 at the breech, and exponentially accelerating through the bore until it reaches the intended final twist rate at the muzzle. The bullet is eased into rotation rather than slammed into it. PROOF has reduced the initial rifling lead angle by 95-98% using this approach, dropping bullet engraving force by approximately 30%. The result is less concentrated wear, fewer pressure spikes, and a bullet that arrives at the muzzle with less deformation and more consistent velocity.

The performance numbers PROOF is reporting:

  • Barrel life improvement: 30-100% longer before measurable accuracy degradation (varies with barrel length and application)
  • Consistency and accuracy improvement: 20-50% across multiple ammunition types and lot variations
  • Engraving force reduction: approximately 30%
  • Rifling lead angle reduction: 95-98%

PXT is available as barrel blanks, AR barrels, and select pre-fit offerings for a growing list of actions. It also debuts in two complete rifle platforms: the Elevation FDX and the Elevation MTR FDX.

FDX Rifle Platforms: Elevation FDX

The Elevation FDX is a backcountry hunting rifle built around the Falkor Defense LW7 action, TriggerTech trigger, Hawkins Precision M5 Hunter bottom metal, and a 3-round Hunter magazine. The Salmon River Solutions SRS Combo Rail handles both ARCA and Picatinny mounting for bipods, tripods, and field support gear. The carbon fiber stock runs Splinter camo with integrated flush cups and a 20 MOA pinned rail. Muzzle is threaded 5/8-24 with a thread protector. Weight runs 5 lbs 14 oz to 6 lbs 2 oz depending on configuration.

Calibers, barrel lengths, and pricing:

  • 22 Creedmoor / 18″ / 1:8 PXT / $3,499
  • 6.5 Creedmoor / 18″ / 1:7.5 PXT / $3,499
  • 6.5 PRC / 20″ / 1:7.5 PXT / $3,799
  • 7mm PRC / 20″ / 1:8 PXT / $3,799
  • 7mm Backcountry / 16.5″ / 1:8 PXT / $3,799
  • 300 PRC / 20″ / 1:9 PXT / $3,799

FDX Rifle Platforms: Elevation MTR FDX

The Elevation MTR FDX is the Mountain Technical Rifle version, designed to bridge precision shooting and hunting in one platform. It runs the same core components as the FDX but swaps in the MTR carbon fiber stock with a slightly raised comb and near-vertical grip for a more natural shooting position behind the rifle. Weight runs 5 lbs 14 oz to 6 lbs 8 oz. Same calibers, same barrel lengths, same thread pattern.

Calibers, barrel lengths, and pricing:

  • 22 Creedmoor / 18″ / 1:8 PXT / $3,799
  • 6.5 Creedmoor / 18″ / 1:7.5 PXT / $3,799
  • 6.5 PRC / 20″ / 1:7.5 PXT / $4,099
  • 7mm PRC / 20″ / 1:8 PXT / $4,099
  • 7mm Backcountry / 16.5″ / 1:8 PXT / $4,099
  • 300 PRC / 20″ / 1:9 PXT / $4,099

Both rifles are available now through authorized PROOF Research dealers. PXT barrel blanks, AR barrels, and pre-fit options are also available with more pre-fit actions being added.

Is barrel life or consistency the bigger factor in how you think about a barrel upgrade, and does the PXT technology address something you have run into with high-pressure modern cartridges? Let us know in the comments below. We always appreciate the feedback.
