Shakespeare Micro Series Adds Light and Ultralight Rods and Reels
Shakespeare has sold Micro rods and combos for years, and the brand is now building that name out into a full light-tackle series. The expanded Micro series covers spincast and spinning reels, casting, spinning, and travel rods, and a handful of complete combos, all built around light and ultralight actions for panfish, trout, and crappie.

On the reel side, there are two main options. The Micro spincast reel comes pre-spooled with Stren line, so it’s ready to fish straight out of the package. It uses a stamped steel handle arm and custom soft-touch handle knobs. The Micro spinning reel gets a two-ball-bearing system, an aluminum spool to keep weight down, a stainless steel bail wire, and the same soft-touch knob. Shakespeare also lists a Micro underspin reel and combo on its site.

The rods all share carbon composite blanks, stainless steel guides with stainless inserts, and cork handles. The lineup includes a Micro spinning rod, a casting rod, and a travel rod. The travel combos come with a branded travel bag for storage and transport, which makes them easy to toss in a truck, camper, or suitcase.
- Spincast Reel: Pre-spooled with Stren line, stamped steel handle arm, soft-touch knobs; MSRP $24.99
- Spinning Reel: Two ball bearings, aluminum spool, stainless bail wire, soft-touch knob; MSRP $24.99
- Rods: Carbon composite blanks, stainless guides and inserts, cork handles; MSRP $24.99 to $34.99
- Spincast and Spinning Combos: MSRP $44.99 to $54.99
- Travel Combos: Includes branded travel bag; MSRP $59.99
- Availability: All rods, reels, and combos available now
None of this is aimed at the tournament crowd, and Shakespeare isn’t pretending it is. The brand’s whole identity has always been affordable, easy-to-use equipment, and the Micro series sticks to that. A full spinning combo for under $55 with a cork handle and an aluminum spool is a solid setup for bluegill off the dock or stocked trout in a creek.

That price range also makes the series a good fit for parents getting kids into fishing who have already outgrown a cartoon combo. The ultralight actions let small fish actually put a bend in the rod, which is half the fun of catching them in the first place.
Everything in the lineup is listed on Shakespeare’s site now, and the reels, rods, and combos can be bought separately or as matched setups.
