Smith & Wesson And Vortex Team Up For New Package Deal

In North American Fudd world, the package deal that includes a rifle and a scope is a very popular item come hunting season. And no wonder; instead of faffing about, trying to fit a scope or find a gunsmith to do the job for you, it’s one-stop shopping, getting both pieces of the equation at once. And now Smith & Wesson has worked out a deal with Vortex, offering a package that includes both a lever-action rifle and a scope that matches, all for one price.

It’s a particularly good idea when you consider that lever-actions like the S&W Model 1854 tend to work better with a different scope than a bolt-action—and most of the scopes on the market were made for your standard Savage/Remington/Ruger/whatever mass-market bolt-action. Instead of shipping a scope with too much magnification or too little eye relief, this Vortex and S&W package is tuned to fit the rifle’s needs.

Specifically, all versions of this package ship with a 32mm Vortex Crossfire HD scope, in 2-7 power and an Illuminated Dead-Hold 2A BDC (MOA) reticle. This scope is supposed to have excellent low-light transmission for hunting in shadowy woods, the exact kind of place you’d use a lever-action rifle. That illuminated reticle will also help in those conditions (just the center dot is lit-up—otherwise it’s a fairly standard duplex with hash marks for windage and elevation dead-hold adjustments). Field of view at lowest magnification is 53.1 feet at 100 yards, or 14.8 feet at the same distance on highest magnification. The scope also carries Vortex’s unlimited, unconditional lifetime warranty, which can be transferred to another user.

As for the rifle itself, it’s your standard Model 1854, available in walnut-and-blued-steel or stainless-and-synthetic.
