Springfield Armory Echelon 4.0FC Wins Spanish National Police Contract
Springfield Armory’s Echelon 4.0FC 9mm pistol has been selected as the new duty handgun for Spain’s National Police after passing demanding accuracy, durability, and reliability-related evaluations against competing international firearms manufacturers.

Springfield Armory has secured a major international law enforcement contract. The company announced Wednesday that the Spanish National Police (Policía Nacional) has officially adopted the Springfield Armory Echelon 4.0FC 9mm pistol as the issued sidearm for its uniformed officers.
The selection comes after the Echelon competed against handguns from numerous international firearms manufacturers in an extensive evaluation process. According to Springfield Armory, the pistol met or exceeded every requirement established by the Spanish National Police’s evaluation team, earning its place as the agency’s new duty handgun.
Spain’s Policía Nacional is responsible for law enforcement throughout the country’s major cities and urban areas, along with counterterrorism operations, immigration enforcement, and other national security responsibilities.
For Springfield Armory and its manufacturing partner, HS Produkt, the contract represents another significant achievement for a pistol platform that debuted in 2023.
Echelon 4.0FC Survives Demanding Police Testing
The Spanish National Police didn’t simply select the Echelon based on its specifications or manufacturer’s reputation. According to Springfield Armory, the pistol faced a demanding series of evaluations designed to test its performance under challenging conditions.
Testing included shooting and accuracy evaluations, barrel obstruction testing, drop testing, parts interchangeability verification, and environmental durability testing at temperatures ranging from -4°F to 122°F.
The Echelon 4.0FC, represented during the selection process by Lejarazu Sport SLU, reportedly met or exceeded all established requirements.
Springfield Armory also reported that the pistol’s modular design played a significant role in the selection. Evaluators valued the ability to quickly reconfigure the platform into different configurations, including compact variants.
What Makes the Springfield Armory Echelon 4.0FC Different?
The Echelon 4.0FC combines a compact 4-inch barrel and slide assembly with a full-size grip frame, delivering the handling characteristics of a shorter handgun without sacrificing full-size ammunition capacity.
Chambered in 9mm, the striker-fired pistol offers 17+1 or 20+1 rounds of capacity and fully ambidextrous controls.
At the center of the design is Springfield Armory’s serialized stainless-steel Central Operating Group (COG), a self-contained chassis that can be transferred between compatible grip modules. The pistol also features Springfield’s Variable Interface System (VIS), allowing numerous popular pistol-mounted optics to attach directly to the slide.
These features make the Echelon an adaptable platform for duty use, concealed carry, and civilian self-defense.
AmmoLand contributor Travis Pike previously tested the Echelon 4.0FC in a detailed hands-on review, comparing its performance against the full-size Echelon.
Pike found that the shorter slide and full-size grip produced faster sight recovery, reducing his measured split times from .23 to .20 seconds during testing at seven yards. His 500-round evaluation recorded two failures to fire, which he suspected were ammunition-related after examining the primers.
Another Major Win for the Echelon Platform
“Springfield Armory and HS Produkt are extremely honored that the Echelon 4.0FC has been selected by the Spanish National Police to be the issued pistol for its uniformed officers,” said Dennis Reese, owner and CEO of Springfield Armory.
The Echelon has already been adopted by numerous American law enforcement agencies and received the National Tactical Officers Association’s highest gold ranking in its Member Tested and Recommended program.
The Spanish National Police’s decision adds a major international endorsement to that growing record.
For American gun owners, the selection is particularly interesting because the Echelon 4.0FC isn’t an exotic, government-only handgun. It’s a commercially available pistol built on the same modular platform available to everyday citizens.
Springfield Armory developed the Echelon to compete in the modern duty-pistol market. Spain’s selection, following extensive comparative testing, demonstrates that the platform is earning serious consideration beyond American shores.
