The newest trend in handgun optics is enclosed emitters over the last several years. As the industry leans into incremental changes and improvements to make optics, handguns, and our shooting experience better, many optic manufacturers believe enclosed emitters are the way. Vortex Optics has announced a couple new enclosed emitters for 2026. One being the Defender-CCW Enclosed Solar Micro Red Dot, which we already reviewed on our sister-site of AllOutdoor.com. So, today we are going to take a look at its more affordable counterpart in the Venom Enclosed 6 MOA Micro Red Dot to see how it performs. Let’s dive in!

What’s in the Box? Vortex Venom Enclosed 6 MOA Micro Red Dot
One of the most common and recurring questions I receive reviewing firearms and their related products is, “what’s in the box?” Meaning, what do you all get with your purchase. This is important because what you do and do not get will dictate what type of accessories you need to additionally buy depending on what you want your end-product or hunting setup to look like. All this being said, this is everything that you will receive:
Included in the Box:
- Custom Tool
- Rubber Cover
- Most Common Mounting Screw Sets
- Lens Cloth
- CR2032 Battery
What’s the Upsell? What’s the 30-Second Elevator Pitch?
So, what’s the upsell? What’s the metaphorical and literal 30-second elevator pitch? For the Venom Enclosed 6 MOA Micro Red Dot, you’re looking at several prominent traits that might tip the scale in favor of Vortex Optics as opposed to a competing manufacturer at a similar price-point.
- Waterproof, Fogproof, and Shockproof - Designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, a wide range of temperatures, and the highest levels of recoil and impact.
- Enclosed Aluminum Housing - Durable 6061 aluminum enclosed housing protects against debris and moisture.
- Side Load Battery - Easy battery changes without having to re-zero your optic.
- Motion Activation with 10 Minute Auto-Shutoff - Automatically activates with motion while 10 minute auto-shutoff saves battery life.
Field Use - Vortex Venom Enclosed 6 MOA Micro Red Dot
So, how did the Vortex Venom Enclosed 6 MOA Micro Red Dot perform out in the field?... To get things rolling, we first needed to get it mounted up to a pistol. I chose my Springfield Armory Echelon 4.5F Comp handgun (4 ½” compensated barrel). The Echelon series of handguns makes for a great optic host because of its Variable Interface System (V.I.S.) for mounting micro red dots and I’ve used to as a testbed for multiple pistol dots now.
Mounting
Between the Variable Interface System (V.I.S.) and all of the hardware that Vortex Optics provides with their Venom Enclosed 6 MOA Micro Red Dot, I had everything I needed to mount this pistol dot.
You can simply reach for the provided Springfield screw set (M4 x 0.7), and select what I affectionately call the appropriate “peg and post” pattern you need (Leupold DeltaPoint® Pro footprint).
Test Firing
Once everything was torqued appropriately with the provided Custom Torx key, we could get to shooting. With the mounting screws having LocTite already applied from the factory, that is one step we didn’t have to worry about covering. Vortex already did it for us.
The zeroing process was quite easy. With the brightness adjustment buttons up top, and windage and elevation adjustments easily accessible as well, I was able to sight-in the red dot within one magazine of shooting.
Accuracy
In terms of accuracy, I was able to play with this red dot over the course of a couple months this spring, and throughout that period of time, the zero maintained. I fired varying velocities, brands, and grain weights (primarily Federal, CCI, and Remington). While my groups would move in ever so slightly, nuanced ways - an inch this way, or an inch that way - depending on the ammunition, it always grouped distinctly every time.
Sight Picture
In regards to your sight picture, if you are running standard height iron sights on whatever pistol you may choose to mount this to, you may not be able to see them. The base or bottom portion of this red dot is thicker or more robust than other optics. So, while that lends itself to better durability, which we’ll discuss in a second, if you want to be able to see your irons through this red dot, you may need suppressor height sights.
Durability
While the Venom Enclosed Red Dot lacks a few features that the Defender-CCW Enclosed Solar Red Dot has like a serrated front face and solar capabilities, the Venom is also $110 cheaper and still built hella thick and robust. So, if you want to rack this optic against a table, 2”x4” post, or something else, you can do it with no worries.
After multiple range sessions and racking this pistol on the optic’s face a bunch of times, you could basically see no wear at all if you simply swiped your finger across the finish once or twice.
Final Thoughts
So, what are my final thoughts on the Venom Enclosed 6 MOA Micro Red Dot?... I am admittedly not the world’s biggest enclosed emitter red dot fan, but the ones that Vortex Optics has been releasing lately are quite good. My biggest gripe is usually that manufacturer’s want to secure the red dot from the side with some kind of inferior mounting attachment. Not the case with Vortex. They have screws mounting the red dot from the top that are easy to access as well as secure and tight. Additionally, there is no weird edge distortion or odd abnormalities you could find in cheaper red dots. So, this one is both affordable/attainable for the average consumer without missing out on the features you would hope to see. If anybody wants to dive in on the Venom Enclosed 6 MOA Micro Red Dot, I wholeheartedly endorse it.
In closing, I want to say thank you to Vortex Optics for allowing TheFirearmBlog and myself the opportunity to try out their Venom Enclosed 6 MOA Micro Red Dot. That is greatly appreciated.
