A late-night armed robbery near downtown Des Moines' Pappajohn Sculpture Park escalated into a violent shootout on Friday, May 22, 2026, leaving a 17-year-old suspect in critical condition. Des Moines Police released the 22-year-old victim without charges after determining he acted in self-defense, grabbing a secondary firearm and firing back after the teenage suspect disarmed him of his initial handgun.
