TULSA, OK — A woman’s ex-boyfriend who climbed onto her apartment balcony and tried to come in through a window on the morning of Friday, Sept. 25, was shot once in the leg by her current boyfriend, according to the Tulsa Police Department. The woman and her child were inside at the time.

Officers were called to a domestic disturbance at an apartment near 66th Place and Victor Avenue around 8:51 a.m., according to a post on the department’s X account. The woman told police her ex-boyfriend was at her door threatening to break in if she did not open up. Her current boyfriend warned him not to come in.

The suspect went around instead. He scaled the balcony. He went for a window. The boyfriend fired once, hitting him in the leg.

Officers arrived to find the suspect bleeding on the balcony. They applied a tourniquet, and paramedics took him to the hospital. Once he is released, police say he will be booked into the Tulsa County Jail on a charge of first degree burglary. That is an arrest, not a conviction, and the post does not mention any charges against the boyfriend.

The sequence here matters. He was told no at the door. He was warned by the man inside. He answered both by climbing to a different point of entry and going for a window into an apartment with a child in it. Every step narrowed the options for the people inside, and the last one took the ambiguity out of it.

Domestic situations carry a risk that a stranger burglary usually does not. The person forcing entry knows exactly who is on the other side and wants them specifically. A locked door does not turn him around, because the door was never what he was after. There is nowhere to retreat to in an apartment, and no reason to assume he stops once he is through the window.

The new partner inherits that problem. If you are with someone whose ex has already shown he cannot accept the end of the relationship, that is your threat now too. Know the history. Talk through what you will both do if he shows up. Keep the door locked, keep the phone close, call 911 the moment it starts, and have the means to defend yourself and the people next to you if the door and the window do not hold.

Protective orders and blocked numbers matter, but they are paper and software. Neither one stops a man on a balcony. The person inside has to be ready to.
