HENRICO COUNTY, VA — Two Henrico residents came home Friday night and found a man they did not know lying in a bed upstairs, and the altercation that followed ended with that man shot dead in the bedroom, according to Henrico Police. After consulting with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, police say no charges will be placed at this time.

Officers responded to the 1600 block of Hilliard Road in the Fairfield Magisterial District around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2026, for a reported shooting. They found an adult male in a bedroom with obvious signs of trauma. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Three adults, two men and a woman, were detained for questioning.

Detectives identified the deceased as Steven Alan Jones, 39, of Gloucester. Police say it does not appear Jones was known to any of the three adults involved.

According to the preliminary investigation, one of the men and the woman returned home and found Jones lying in an upstairs bed. The third man had been in the house the whole time but did not report anything suspicious before Jones was discovered. A stranger got inside an occupied home, up the stairs, and into a bed without the person already there noticing. That is the part I would want every reader to think about before worrying about anything else in this story.

An altercation broke out between the three men. Jones was shot. He died in that bedroom.

Police have not described what happened during the altercation, who fired, or what Jones did once he was found. Those details are what the Commonwealth’s Attorney weighed, and they are not public.

The residents of this house are not identified, and no one has been charged. The decision not to place charges was made after consultation with the Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and a review of the current evidence, which police describe as a decision for now rather than a closed file. Investigators are still asking anyone with information to contact Det. J. Seay at (804) 501-7323 or Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000, or to submit a tip through P3tips.com.

Three people walked through their own front door on a Friday night and found a man none of them recognized lying upstairs in the dark. The one who was already home never knew he was there. Minutes later the man was dead, and for the moment, prosecutors have decided no one will answer for it in court.
